IB Exams are moving online: What does this mean for IB students?

The IB is going digital! Starting May 2026, select IBDP exams will be available online, with a full rollout by November. This shift aims for more engaging, accessible, and eco-friendly assessments. Paper exams will still be an option for now.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is making a leap into the digital era with the introduction of online examinations for the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). This transformation aims to create a more engaging, accessible, and environmentally responsible assessment process. Starting with a select group of schools in May 2026, the roll-out will offer both digital and paper options for certain subjects like Language and Literature and Language Acquisition. By November 2026, all IB World Schools will have the opportunity to participate.

This shift reflects a broader trend in education toward online assessments.

Key Benefits of Digital IB Exams

The IB's digital exams bring a host of benefits for students, schools, and educators:

  • Improved Student Experience: Digital exams are designed to enhance accessibility, offering tools like interactive features, video footage, and moving images. These innovations allow students to engage more naturally with assessments.
  • Inclusivity and Fairness: Grade boundaries are set to ensure parity between paper and digital exams, offering students the choice without impacting results.
  • Efficiency: The shift to digital reduces administrative burdens and improves the accuracy of exam processes.
  • Environmental Responsibility: By eliminating the need for paper-based exams, digital assessments lower the environmental impact.

Preparing for the Digital Transition

The IB will release specimen digital exams starting in May 2025 to help schools and students familiarize themselves with the new format. Initially, digital exams will closely mirror their paper counterparts to ensure consistency in learning outcomes.

The IB plans to expand the availability of digital exams to include more subjects—such as Sciences, Mathematics, and Individuals and Societies—after trials in 2025-2026. The phased approach ensures a smooth transition and allows for feedback and adaptation.

Online IB Education: A New Frontier

The IB has also made strides in offering the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) online, enabling students from around the world to access quality education without being tied to a physical campus. Schools like King’s InterHigh, Dwight Global Online, and SEK Education are among the first to deliver the IBDP remotely.

For students who relocate frequently or live in areas with limited access to IB schools, online education provides flexibility and continuity. While digital exams are optional for now, the move signals a significant evolution in how education is delivered and assessed globally.

Below is a timeline of the changes shared by the IB
